Funeral services for Dwight Morgan of Newton will be Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. Friends may call at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home after 1 p.m. today, Nov. 10. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be designated to the First United Methodist Church or the Newton YMCA.
B. Dwight Morgan, the son of Wyatt Wayne and Leona (Moore) Morgan, was born May 17, 1923, in Gravity. Dwight graduated from the Newton Senior High School in 1942.
He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Campaign. He received the Navy Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Following his military service he went on to Bradley University in Peoria, Ill.
On July 9, 1950, Dwight was united in marriage with Remona Copeland in Fairfield. Dwight was a watchmaker and jeweler for 54 years. He was able to purchase his first jewelry store in Brooklyn in 1954. He opened Morgan Jewelers at the Newton Shopping Mall in 1961, and continued serving the Newton community until 2004. Dwight enjoyed wood carving, photography, snorkeling and traveling. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion, Newton Post #111, Newton Noon Kiwanis, Iowa Jewelers and Watchmakers Association and was President of the Newton Mall Tenants Association for many years.
Dwight died on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008, at his home in Newton. He was 85 years old.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Remona, on April 15, 2005; and a brother, Joseph Eldred Morgan.
Those left to honor Dwight’s memory include his daughter, Suanne (Art) Rolader of Mansfield, Texas; his son, Tim (Sandy) Morgan of Newton; and his granddaughter, Lauren Morgan.
