GRINNELL — Richard R. “Dick” Winchell, 69, of Grinnell died Oct. 26, 2008, at his home.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Mike Johnson, pastor of the Kellogg Christian Church, and the Rev. Susan Sanning, Grinnell Regional Medical Center and Hospice Chaplain, officiating.
Honorary pallbearers will be Kellee Jordan, Dustin, Derek and Alyssa Winchell, and Austin and Kristen Coomer.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday evening.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Dick Winchell Memorial Fund.
Dick was born July 29, 1939, in Grinnell, the son of Lloyd Raymond and Edith Pauline (Pierce) Winchell. He was raised in the Jasper County area and attended country school near his home and later public schools in Kellogg and Newton. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served on the U.S.S. Yorktown.
On July 12, 1958, he was united in marriage to Patricia Rose Ulrey, in Grinnell. The couple lived in Kellogg and Newton prior to moving to Grinnell in 1982. He was an electrician for 40 years and during that time had received his Master’s Electrician License.
Dick was a member of the Kellogg Christian Church and the Moose Lodge in Newton. He enjoyed camping and campfires, hunting and fishing and restoring cars. He had a big sense of humor and enjoyed entertaining people as a clown.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Grinnell; two children, Robert and Deborah Winchell, both of Grinnell; three brothers, Ralph Winchell of Kellogg, Walt Claussen of Newburg and John Claussen of Des Moines; two sisters, Dorothy Weyers and Marge Thomas, both of Killduff; six grandchildren, Kellee Jordan, Dustin, Derek and Alyssa Winchell, and Austin and Kristen Coomer; and one great-granddaughter, Baylee Jordan.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
