Lester R. Smothers, 37, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Colfax Cemetery in Colfax.
Memorials to the VFW Post 1655 may be left at the funeral home.
The Wallace Family Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton is in charge of arrangements.
Born Jan. 22, 1971, in Newton, he was the son of Ray and Karolyn (Tinnermeier) Smothers. Lester was a lifelong resident of Newton.
A graduate of Dubuque High School in 1990, he worked various jobs and at Progress Industries. Lester was a member of the VFW Post 1655 Auxiliary.
Survivors include his father and step-mother, Ray and Jan Smothers of Colfax; his mother, Karolyn Kay Smothers of Waukee; his brothers and sisters, Cindy (Mark) Irvin of Waukee, Connie Smothers of Newton, his twin brother, Louis (Alla) Smothers of Mingo, Shawn (Amy) Smothers of Waukee, and Megan (Jeff) Tindle of Montezuma; step-grandparents, Wilbur and Coleen Robson of Colfax; and many nieces and nephews.
Lester was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.
