MONROE — John C. Van Veen, 90, of Monroe died Saturday, May 10, 2008, in the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, May 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church with burial following at Silent City Cemetery. Visitation will be today, May 12, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.
Memorials may be given to the Monroe United Methodist Church or Hospice of Jasper County. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com.
The son of Herman and Gertrude (Loverink) Van Veen, John was born on June 21, 1917, in Pella. On Dec. 31, 1940, he was united in marriage to Gladys Verwers in Killduff. John farmed in the area and owned the Western Auto Store for five years, worked for the DOT for nine years and drove a school bus. He was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church. John was also an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.
Those left to honor his memory are his children, Kenneth (Sheryl) Van Veen of Newton, David (Diana) Van Veen of Monroe and Duane Van Veen of Newton, and a daughter-in-law, Donna Van Veen of Monroe; 14 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.
Preceding John in death were his parents; wife; a son, Dennis; a sister, Jennie Van Veen; and a brother, Garritt.
