Funeral services for Roy E. Schwartz, 94, of Careage of Newton, a longtime resident of Newton, were held today, July 8, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Bill Adams, associate pastor of the Community Heights Alliance Church, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation with the family was held Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the Monroe Fire Department will be accepted.

He died Friday noon at Careage.

Survivors are his wife, Myrtle; twin sons, Kenneth E. of Kellogg and Keith E. of Reasnor; a step-son, Marion "Bud" Marchant of Newton; a daughter, Verle Paul of Phoenix, Ariz.; a step-daughter, Reva Nelson of Keystone, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Clara, March 14, 1952, three sisters, Bertha, Flora and Elsie in infancy, and two brothers, Ralph and Earnest in infancy.

Mr. Schwartz was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church, county, state and national rural mail carrier organizations, American Legion Post 363 of Monroe and World War I post 1503.

An Army veteran of World War I, Mr. Schwartz had been a rural mail carrier from 1921 until retiring in 1962.

The son of Henry P. and Hannah Branson Schwartz, he was born May 10, 1897 in Rolla, Mo.

He was married to Clara Josephine Johnson April 10, 1923 in Des Moines and to Myrtle Hambleton Marchant Feb. 19, 1955 in Rolla, Mo.

Mr. Schwartz had moved to Marshall County in 1915 where he was employed as a farmhand, had moved to Cedar Rapids where he worked in a factory and then moved to Laurel where he was farmhand. Following duty in the Army he moved to Monroe where he resided until moving to the nursing home. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, July 1991
