Jim Tyler, 79, lifetime Newton resident and longtime attorney, died suddenly at his home on Monday, Aug. 13, 2007. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Aug. 20, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church where he was a member and elder, followed by lunch at the church and visitation with the family. Interment will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

The middle son of Lyle B. and Nelle Loy Tyler, Jim was born at Skiff hospital on Sept. 27, 1927. He attended Lincoln School and graduated from Newton High School in 1946. He served twice in the U.S. Army, from 1946 to 1947, when he was a regimental bandmaster in the occupation of Japan at Beppu and Kyoto and again from 1950 to 1951.

Meanwhile, he attended Drake University and graduated in 1954 with a LL.B. degree, and later with a J.D. degree. Jim practiced law in Newton from 1955 until he retired to part-time status in 2002 from the law firm of Matthias, Campbell, Tyler, Nuzum and Rickers.

In 1953, he was married to Joan Welle of Newton. They are the parents of two sons, John Frederic (Tami) of Covington, Ga., and Thomas Loy (Caroline Costle) of Alexandria, Va., and have two grandchildren, Alexander James and Elizabeth JoAnne Costle-Tyler.

He is survived by two brothers, Bill (June Lee) of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lyle (Denise) of Milford, Mich., as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.

Jim was active in many civic organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce (president in 1963); Newton Jaycees; Tallcorn Council of the Boy Scouts; the Newton School Board; Newton Development Corporation; JEDCO; Newton Community Theatre Board; Jasper County Mental Health Center Board; and the Red Rock Area Community Action Program. He was pleased to have participated in the development of Wesley Park Centre as chair of the Newton Retirement Foundation. He received the Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award in 1994. Jim served several terms on both the Board of Governors and Ethics Committee of the Iowa Bar Association. He was a member and past president of the Newton Rotary Club.

Jim had many interests and avocations. He had held a private pilot’s license and was an avid photographer. He greatly enjoyed family and friends, tennis, boating, music and travel — especially to England, Yellowstone and the Tetons. He was an enthusiastic gardener, continuously expanding his large flower beds for more than forty years.

The family suggests memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church or Newton Development Corporation.
