COLFAX — Alfred J. Smith, 73, of Colfax, died Aug. 10, 2007, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax. Burial will follow at the Colfax Cemetery in Colfax.

Visitation for Mr. Smith will be Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. A Rosary will be recited at 5:30 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 8 p.m. Memorials may be given in Alfred J. Smith’s name and given to a charity of choice.

The son of Irving William and Elsie Rose (Berst) Smith, Alfred was born on March 30, 1934, in Charles City. Al served in the United States Army. He moved to Colfax from Charles City in 1948. Al worked at Maytag for 30 years.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and the Jasper County Gun Club. Al was an avid runner and completed several marathons. He also was extremely proud of completing RAGBRAI in 1996.

Those left to honor his memory are one son David (Mary) Smith of Colfax; four daughters, Cindy Smith of Colfax, Melissa Rankin of Batavia, Lisa (Charles) Gibbons of Newton, and Becky (Mike) Chamberlain of Johnston; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Stanley Smith of Colfax; one sister, Ellen (David) Lovell of Missouri Valley; and Laura Smith, the mother of his children and good friend.

Preceding Al in death were his parents; one brother, James Eugene Smith; and one granddaughter, Rachel Lynn Rankin.
