Charles J. Roberts, 66, of Newton died Aug. 29, 2007, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Chaplain Merle Smith of the Skiff Medical Center in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Cuba Cemetery in rural Avery.

Memorial in Charles’ names may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Ivan and Margaret (Anderson) Roberts, he was born Jan. 5, 1941, in Albia and has lived in Newton since 1959. On July 9, 1988, he was united in marriage with Angeline M. Jones.

He graduated from the Albia High School in Albia and was a production worker for over 33 years at the Maytag Company in Newton, retiring in 1992. He had been a coach for city league girls softball and boys little league baseball, he was a member of the UAW Local 997 Retirees Union and played in the Maytag Fast Pitch Softball League. He was a New York Yankees, Chicago Bears, Chicago Bulls and an Iowa State Cyclones fan.

Survivors are his wife, Angie of Newton; one daughter, Donna (Randy) Mikesell of Newton; one son, Tim I. Roberts of Ottumwa; one step-daughter, Carla (Steve) Dippold of Altoona; six grandchildren, Eric Roberts, Jeremy Roberts, Michael Dippold, Staci Dippold, Randy Mikesell Jr. and Alisha (Ian) Johnston; one great-granddaughter, Leah Johnston; one brother, Tom (Barb) Roberts of Albia; and three nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
