COLFAX — Edward L. Flattery, 82 of Colfax passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital of Des Moines.

Funeral services for Mr. Flattery will be Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Colfax with burial following at Colfax Cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Flattery will be today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church from 2 until 7:30 p.m. with the family present to greet friends from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Following the visitation, at 7:30 p.m. there will be a vigil service followed by a rosary at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church Building Fund or Knights of Columbus Scholarship Fund.

The son of James Jay and Blanche (Kosman) Flattery, Ed was born on May 31, 1925, in Monroe County. He was the second of five sons and was raised near Georgetown and Albia. Edward graduated from St. Patrick’s High School of Georgetown in 1941. On July 19, 1951, he was united in marriage to Helen M. Crall in Albia. After serving in the United States Army during the Korean War, Ed and Helen settled in Colfax, where they have lived since 1952. Edward worked at Maytag in the paint department and machine shop during his employment there. He retired in 1987 after 371/2 years of service.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #175, U.A.W. Local #997, Immaculate Conception Parish of Colfax and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Edward enjoyed playing pitch, cribbage and watching Chicago Cubs baseball.

Edward is survived by his wife Helen of 56 years; five sons, Steve (Linda) of Indianola, Don (Kimberly) of Glendale, Ariz., Ed (Mary Dell) of Colfax, Larry of Newton, and Bernard of Colfax; two daughters, Mary Smith (Dave) of Colfax and Tina Holzworth (Tim) of Valeria; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Vince (Kay) of Albia, James (Clara Lou) of Des Moines and Louie (Martha) of Knoxville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents, James and Blanche Flattery; one brother, Gene Flattery; one daughter, Elaine Warrick; and one son-in-law, Brian Hartgers.
