Herbert G. Bergstrom

Herbert G. Bergstrom, 87, a longtime former Newton service station owner-operator, who organized the Iowa Auto Mechanics Union and also the Iowa State Gas Dealers Association, died of cancer Wednesday morning, Dec. 8, at Skiff Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Reese Chapel.

The Rev. William Calhoun, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Friday and visitation with the family will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials to Hospice of Jasper County or a fund in his name will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Florence; a son and daughter-in-law, Herbert C. and June of Pleasant Hill; three daughters and sons-in-law, Delores and George Borlin of Des Moines, Lois and Albert Master of Newton and Dorothy and Jerry Buckley of Memphis, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Inga Heggen of Harcourt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and a sister.

Mr. Bergstrom, who served on the Newton City Council for two years, was a member of the Newton Chamber of Commerce, Izaak Walton League, was a 72-year member of Scandia, Norden Sick Benefit Society and a 50-year member of the Newton Rotary Club, with a 42-year perfect attendance record.

The recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award from the Newton Noon Rotary Club, Mr. Bergstrom, was 50-year member and Gold Star member of the International Mechanics Union and first president of the Iowa State Retail Gas Dealers organization.

Mr. Bergstrom, a resident of Newton since moving from Des Moines in 1944, was general foreman at the Ankeny Arms Plant during World War II and had operated Cities Service, Citgo and Gulf Stations in Newton from 1946 to 1974.

The son of Claes and Ida Lundeen Bergstrom, he was born Aug. 16, 1906 in Des Moines and attended Des Moines East High school.

He was married to Florence Winters March 24, 1926 in Nevada. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, December 1993
