John Kaisand Dies Monday; Rites Friday

John Kaisand, 78, of Rt. 2, Grinnell, a longtime resident of the Jasper County area, died Monday at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Newburg United Church of Christ Congregational.

The Rev. Robert Hempel, pastor of the church will conduct services. Burial will be in the Hazelwood Cemetery and Grinnell.

Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell after noon Wednesday.

Survivors are his wife, Elizabeth; five sons, Emory J. of Kellogg, Merton E. of Pella and Edmund H., Elmer and Earl, all of Newton; and two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Betty) Hudnutt of Grinnell and Mrs. Les (Maxine) Rasmussen of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four sisters; and two brothers.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Mr. Kaisand was a member of the Newburg United Church of Christ Congregational, Farm Bureau, Grinnell Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and Victor Grange, for which he had served in a number of offices. He had been a board member of the Rock Creek School No. 5 and the Wildcats school No. 8.

The son of Jacob and Mattie Hink Kaisand, he was born Aug. 20, 1899 at Grinnell and attended Grinnell schools.

He was married to Elizabeth J. Fuller Jan.22, 1923 at Newton.

Mr. Kaisand had farmed in the Gilman, LeGrand and Newton communities before moving to the Grinnell area. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, January 1978
