Dorothy Van Gent

SULLY - Dorothy Verwers Van Gent, 92, of Sully, a longtime resident of Jasper County and Marion Counties, died this morning, Nov. 22, at the New Sharon Care Center of heart failure.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Reformed Church in Sully.

The Rev. Roger Punt, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Ralph Menning of Pella will conduct services. Burial will be in the Sully Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Home in Newton after 8 a.m. Tuesday and visitation with the family will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the First reformed Church in Sully will be accepted.

Survivors are two sons, Edward of Mountain Home, Ark., and Kenneth of Pella; two daughters, Esther (Mrs. Guysbert) Van Wyk of Lynnville and Janice Henning of Killduff; 14 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are three brothers Henry Verwers of Pella, Raymond Verwers of Newton and Melvin Verwers of Grinnell; and a sister, Margaret Ridgeway of Newton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Peter, Dec. 28, 1982, a son and daughter in infancy, her son-in-law, Carl Henning Jr., two great-grandchildren, a sister, Cora Poortinga; and three brothers, William "Bill,” Ben and Marion Verwers.

Mrs. Van Gent, a homemaker, was a member of First Reformed Church in Sully and the Ladies Aid.

The daughter of Jacob and Dena Rozenberg Verwers, she was born April 10, 1901 near Otley.

She was married to Peter Van Gent Feb. 6, 1926 in Pella. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, November 1993
