Funeral services for Richard Whannel, 77, of Newton, who died July 21, 2007, at the Skiff Medical Center in Newton, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Pence-Reese Funeral Home in Newton.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Family visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. Thursday. Memorials may be designated for the American Heart Association.

Richard Hugh “Dick” Whannel, the son of Tom Garfield and Edna (Cusbertson) Whannel, was born Nov. 17, 1929, in Traer. He attended school in Searsboro and had lived in the Grinnell area.

Dick served his country with the U.S. Army. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Brandenberg. He was employed by the Maytag Company in Newton, retiring in 1988. Dick was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton and the UAW Retirees Union Local #997. A resident of the Newton area since 1951, he later married LuAnn Schennel. He enjoyed his friends, poodles and Cadillacs.

Those left to honor the memory of Dick include his two sons, Brandon Paul Whannel of Pawnee, Okla., and Richard “Ricky” Kelly Whannel of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, John and one sister, Bessie.
