Margery M. Southern, 87 of Newton, formerly of Mingo, died Thursday, May 31, 2007, at her home in Park Centre in Newton.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Newton. The Rev. Gary Marzolf will officiate. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Ashton Cemetery in rural Mingo. Memorials to the First United Methodist Church or to Park Centre may be left at the funeral home or at the church on the morning of the service.

The daughter of Floyd and Ethel Wiley, she was born May 1, 1920, in rural Mingo. She lived in Mingo from 1920 to 1982. She had lived in Newton since 1982. She was united in marriage on June 30, 1938 in Missouri to Francis A. Southern.

She graduated from Mingo High School. She was a farmer’s wife and homemaker. She also was a seamstress, making draperies for 30 years. The last 12 years of making draperies, she owned and operated Margery’s Drapery Shop. She loved to sew. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Lana (Rick) Kruse of Ankeny; one grandson, Kevin (Sarah) Kruse of Des Moines; one great-grandson, Kaleb Kruse of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis in 1990; a son, Richard in 1989; two sisters, Lorene Schweinebart and Viva Connelly; and one brother, Dale Wiley.
