Larry L. Ray, 70, of Newton died Monday, June 18, 2007, at Heritage Manor Care Center in Newton.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 21 at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton.

The Rev. David Rex of the Metz Community Church in Metz will officiate. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
Memorials in his name may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Willis and Velma (Stephens) Ray, he was born Oct. 12, 1936, in Richland Township of Adair County. He had lived in Newton since 1962. He was united in marriage to Marcia K. Newburn on Feb. 12, 1961, in Clearfield. A graduate of Creston High School in Creston, he was a truck driver, driving for Hawkeye Wood Shavings for 20 years, retiring in 2006.

He was a lifetime member of the Emerson Hough Chapter of the Izaak Walton League. He had received the million mile award. To which he had added many thousands of miles. He also enjoyed having coffee and talking with friends.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia; two sons, Craig Ray of Cedar Rapids and Rod (Jodie) Ray of Newton; one daughter, Lori (Scott) Van Zee of Newton; three grandchildren, Jordan Ray, Chelsea Van Zee and Nathan Van Zee; and one sister, Dawna Ray of Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his granddaughter, Katie Van Zee in infancy.
