Bewyer, Bette Jean (Bickel) 1917-2007

Bette Jean Bewyer, 90, the daughter of Isaac N. and Lola (Prince) Bickel was born March 24, 1917, in Newton. A lifelong resident of Newton, Bette graduated from Newton Senior High School with the class of 1935.

She was united in marriage with Willard Coldren Bewyer on May 16, 1937, in Bethany, Mo. She devoted her life to her husband and family. She had worked for Skiff Medical Center and for Dr. Wayne Straight’s office.

She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton and the Brown Bag Club. Bette loved her grandchildren. She enjoyed craftwork and playing cards when she was able.

She died July 1, 2007, at the Monarch Wing at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Bette was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willard in 1996; one daughter, Jane, in infancy; one granddaughter in infancy; one brother, Roy; and three sisters, Nada Nelson, Helen Woody and Bonnie Selway.

Those left to honor Bette’s memory include three sons, Ronnal (Nancy) Bewyer of Hernanda, Fla., Dennis (Barbara) of Iowa City and Steven Bewyer of Newton; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A graveside memorial service will be today at 6 p.m. at the Newton Union Cemetery in Newton. Memorials may be designated to the Hospice of Jasper County Monarch Wing.
