W. J. Koppin is Victim of ‘Cycle Crash

Services for Newton Youth Tuesday at The Morgan Funeral Home

Funeral services for William John Koppin, 19, Newton youth who was killed in a car-motorcycle collision Sunday near Princeton, Ia., will be held at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon at the Morgan Funeral Home.

William and a companion, Richard Elmer Husset, 19, of Le Claire were both killed when the motorcycle on which they were riding collided head on with a car one half mile east of Princeton on Highway 67. Both were thrown under the car in the collision. Princeton is located about 20 miles northeast of Davenport.

Going West

Scott County Coroner, Frank C. Keppy, said that the motorcycle owned and operated by William was going west, while the car operated by Harry Speth of Davenport was coming from the opposite direction. Speth suffered an arm injury, but three other passengers in the auto escaped injury. The accident occurred at 11:45 o’clock Sunday morning.

William suffered internal injuries, a broken jaw, lacerated ear, fracture of the leg, arm and left leg and his right leg was fractured above the knee, Coroner Keppy said. He said that an inquest will be held later this week.

Rev. F. D. Bolt, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, will officiate at the services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Class of ‘47

The son of George and Alice Koppin of Newton, William was born Dec. 31, 1928, at Skiff hospital. He graduated from Newton high school with the class of 1947 after taking a commercial course.

He had resided in Newton until seven and one-half months ago when he went to Le Claire to become yard foreman of the Hart Lumber Company there. He was a member of the First Lutheran church in Newton.

Survivors include his parents and two sisters, Marilyn and Nancy Lee, both at home.
