DES MOINES - Funeral services for Jennie Holmes Torsky, 78, of Des Moines, a former resident of Jasper County, were held this afternoon, April 30, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton.

Chaplain Steve Melby of Hospice of Central Iowa in Des Moines conducted services. Burial was in Hewitt Cemetery in rural Reasnor.

Visitation with the family was held Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials in her name may be left at the funeral home.

She died Friday morning at the home of her daughter, Patricia Sue (Mrs. Jack) Main of Des Moines of cancer.

Also surviving are another daughter, Marjorie Louise (Mrs. Wayne) Chambers of Altoona; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Joseph, two brothers, Howard Holmes and Floyd Holmes, two sisters, Delia (Mrs. Carl) De Bruyn and Ida (Mrs. Paul) Brand and two grandchildren in infancy.

Mrs. Torsky had worked as a switch board operator in Reasnor and Grimes, in several meat departments in Des Moines grocery stores and had owned and operated Whipoorwill Resort in Park Rapid, Minn.

The daughter of Charles and Minnie Breen Holmes, she was born May 9, 1911 in Galesburg and attended Galesburg country schools.

She was married to James Mudgett Dec. 7, 1935 in Jasper County and to Joseph Torsky Feb. 15, 1963 in Grimes.

Mrs. Torsky resided in the Galesburg and Reasnor areas until 1949 when she movd to the Grimes and Des Moines areas. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, April 1990
