Steven E. Thurman

Funeral services for Steven E. Thurman, 32, a resident of Newton for the past five years, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 3, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English.

Father David Wilkening, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in North English Cemetery.

A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the Powell Funeral Home in North English.

Memorials to an educational fund for the Thurman children may be left at the funeral home.

Mr. Thurman died Sunday at his home in Newton.

Survivors are his wife, Cindy; two daughters, Samantha and Sabrina, both at home, and his parents, Robert and Kay Miller of North English.

Also surviving are three brothers, Robert of Waterloo, Edward of Osseo, Wis., and Larry of Iowa City; two sisters, Barbara Thurman of North English and Lisa Fyfe of Ankeny; his grandmother, Violet Wolfe of North English; two step-brothers, Dan Miller and Ralph Miller, both of North English; a step-sister, Janet Palmer of Waukon; and his step-grandmother, Edna Miller of Mission, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jerry, in 1970.

Mr. Thurman was a telemarketer for Shockley Associates of Ankeny.

He was a member of the Iowa National Guard, Newton and Des Moines Jaycees, the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and a first lieutenant in the Individual Ready Reserves.

He was born March 4, 1959 in Iowa City and was educated in North English schools. A 1977 graduate of North English Community High School, he attended Iowa Wesleyan University at Mount Pleasant and Grand View College in Des Moines.

He was married to Cynthia Brinegar May 23, 1981 in Fayetteville, N.C.

The couple resided in Mount Pleasant for two years before moving to newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, March 1991
