John L. Thomas

John L. Thomas, 69, of 305 E. 23rd St. N., Republican candidate for the Jasper County Board of Supervisors, died monday morning, Oct. 1, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines of a heart attack.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Reese Chapel.

The Rev. Jerry Brown, pastor of the First United Mthodist Church, will conduct services.

A military flag presentation and Masonic rites will be held at Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Wednesday. Visitation with the family will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorials to Progress Industries may be left at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Phyllis; a daughter, Cathi Jo Thomas of Newton; two brothers, Charles and Donald, both of Mitchellville; and four sisters, Norma Hodge and Shirley Gooden, both of Mitchellville, Stella (Mrs. Tom) English of Rising Sun and Hazel (Mrs. John) Van Ekeren of Colfax.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Harry.

Mr. Thomas was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Rotary Club, Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Des Moines, Newton Country Club, Newton Booster Club, I Club, Newton Masonic Lodge 59 AF and AM, Elks Lodge 1270, Newton Veterans of Foreigh Wars, American Legion, Iowa Society of Certified Public Accountants, National Society of Certified Public Accountants, and American Institute of Public Accountants.

Mr. Thomas, a self-emplyed certified public accountant, served in the Army in World War II.

The son of Harris and Ruth Williams Thomas, he was born Nov. 19, 1920 in Farrar, was graduated from Colfax Community hgh School and attended Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Mo.

He was married to Phyllis Marsh June 12, 1954. ~ The Newton, (IA) Daily News, October 1990
