Charles E. Brown

OSCEOLA - Charles E. Brown, 74, of rural Osceola, a former resident of Newton and Prairie City, died Saturday, December 4, at Des Moines General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Fielding Funeral Home in a Chariton.

The Rev. Julie Mc Cullough, pastor of Russell first United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Chariton Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Mildred; a son, Charles of Baxter; a daughter, Lavina Dawson of Colfax; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren; 19 step-grandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a brother, Ernest of St. Joseph, Mo.; and half brother, Edgar of St. Joseph, Mo.; and a step-sister, Ozella Paprai.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The son of Martin Van Buren and Myrtle Brown, he was born Jan. 11, 1919 in Knoxville. He was a 1939 graduate of Prairie City Community High School.

Mr. Brown, who resided in Newton for many years, was employed at Montgomery Ward and later at the Maytag Co.

He moved to rural Osceola from Des Moines three years ago.

He was married to Mildred Conklin in 1969 in Prairie City. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, December 1993
