Myrtle Marchant Schwartz, 96, of Careage of Newton, formerly of Monroe, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 22, at Careage of Newton.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Eldon Pals of Newton, a Baptist minister, will conduct services. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery, 17 miles West of Perry.

Visitation with the family will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials to the United Methodist Church in Monroe or the Monroe Fire Department will be accepted.

Survivors are a son, Marion "Bud" of Newton; a daughter, Rita Nelson of Lemoyne, Neb.; nine grandchildren; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; many step great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clarence W. Hambleton of Carroll.

She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, Herbert Marchant, in May 1952, her second husband, Roy Schwartz, July 5, 1991, a son, Gail, in 1975, a stepson, five brothers, Edwin, Clinton and Clayton, twin brothers, Ace and Walter; three sisters, Hazel Butler, Olive Rice and Grace Williams.

Mrs. Schwartz was a member of the United Methodist Church in Monroe, United Methodist Women's Society, World War I Ladies Auxiliary 1503, Rural Mail Carriers Auxiliary and Monroe Women's Club.

Mrs. Schwartz had owned and operated a hotel-café in Ayrshire, and had been a seamstress for several years, and had been a practical nurse for several years at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines and Skiff Medical Center and Nelson Manor, both in Newton.

The daughter of Enos W. and Eva Esabelle Page Hambleton, she was born February 22, 1898 in Carroll County.

She was married to Herbert Marchant April 2, 1916 in Guthrie Center and to Roy Elmer Schwartz February 19, 1955 in Rolla, Mo.

Mrs. Schwartz moved with her family to Guthrie County at the age of one and to Jasper County in 1955. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, February 1994
