David Hughes, pioneer coal miner, died at his home northwest of Colfax, following an illness of several months.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the Christian Church with the pastor, Rev. A. A. Burr officiating.

David Hughes, son of David and Sarah Hughes, was born in Mountain Ash, Wales on the 19th day of Aug. 1864, and passed from this life at his home northwest of Colfax Saturday morning, December 30th, 1939. His age was 75 years 4 months and 11 days. He had been ill for a number of months with asthma, but was able to be about until 48 hours before his death.

When a young man he came to America. In his native land he was a coal miner, and upon arrival in this country he engaged in the only calling with which he was familiar. The first years he spent in the coal fields of Kentucky and Tennessee but about fifty years ago he came to Colfax, where he worked at mining as long as he was able to work, and where he lived continuously until death.

On the 27th day of November, 1800, he was united in marriage with Emma Stienberger of Colfax. To this union ten children were born. There were six boys and four girls. One of the girls, Mary Bell, preceded her father in death in 1906. The sons living are Thomas, residing in Canada; Fred and David W. of Marshalltown; John of Newton, Ia., Henry of Des Moines, and Dan, of Colfax. The daughters are Mrs. Charles McNeer, Chicago, Ill., Mrs. Abe Camp and Mrs. Ben Johnson of Colfax. There are eleven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. The nieces and nephews are Mrs. Dave Thomas, Mrs. George Stover, and Daniel Price, all of Colfax, and Mrs. David Price, residing in Minnesota. There are two brothers of the deceased, Lewis and Thomas, still living in the land of his nativity.

When Mr. Hughes was a small child, he united with a church in his home country. For a great many years he was a member of the United Mine Workers of America.

There are many neighbors and friends who unite in offering sympathy in this hour of the family's bereavement.

Music was provided by Mrs. Geo. Rinker and Mrs. Earl Plummer and Mrs. Laz Johns, the latter singing a solo in Welch, with Mrs. Howard Williams accompanist.

Pall bearers were Tom Wison, Harry Darrock, Tom Hughes, Frank Morgan, Fred Moll, and Richard Evans.

Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. Emil Kvasny and Mrs. V. D. Main.

Interment was in the McKeever Cemetery.

On the 27th day of November, 1890, he was united in marriage with Emma Steinberger of Colfax.
