Fred Thornburg, 93, of Newton died of Alzheimer's disease Friday at Newton Health Center. Graveside services were Monday in Hamilton Cemetery. Mr. Thornburg, a retired railroad worker, lived in Albia before moving to Newton.

He is survived by a daughter, Ruby Long of Newton; two stepdaughters, Glenna Gist of Bussey and Bernice Waters of Knoxville; a stepson, Tom Mefford, address unknown; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Fred Thornburg

Graveside rites for Fred Thornburg, 93, of Newton, were held today at Hamilton Cemetery.

Gilbert Funeral Home in Albia handled arrangements.

He died Friday, Nov. 4, at the Newton Health Care Center.

Survivors are a daughter, Ruby Long of Newton; two step-daughters, Glenna Gist of Bussey and Bernice Waters of Knoxville; a step-son, Tom Mefford; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, a son, Robert, and 10 brothers and sisters.

Mr. Thronburg, a member of the Maintance of Way, had been employed by the M and St. L Railroad.

The son of Lewis P. and Bessie C. Mc Clain Thornburg, he was born April 11, 1901 in Rippey.

He was married to Lydia Motsick and later to Sylvia Mefford.

Mr. Thornburg resided in Albia prior to coming to Newton. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, November 1994
