John Franklin Offill, son of James and Mary A. Offill, was born in Carter County, Kentucky on March 17, 1841, and died January 9, 1924. He came with his parents to Prairie City, arriving April 1, 1863.

He joined the Home Guards, in Kentucky, then the 3rd. Iowa Cavalry, Company A, of Iowa, on Feb. 29, 1864. Discharged on August 9, 1865.

Married Jane Spurgeon in December, 1866. Three children; Myrtle, who died in childhood; Charles B., of Seattle; and Mrs. Alta Tollenaar, of Portland, Oregon. His wife died in March, 1875.

He was married in August, ( ) to Sarah E. Bidwell, who survives.

Mrs. E. W. Phelps was reared in their home.

Burial was in Waveland.
