William M. Bates was born in Highland Co., Ohio, June 3,1844 and died December 19, 1924.

Came to Iowa, near Swan at age 25 years.

Married Mary C. McCoy on April 15, l869.

Six children - John D. and Mrs. Milrena Lyon, both
of Swan, Joseph L. of Beech, Miss Zona and Mrs. Marcella Enyart, both of Prairie City and Della, who died in infancy. His wife died in 1887.

He was again married to Nancy A. Taylor in 1890. She died in 1920.
