Emery B. Adkins died December 20, 1886 at his home three mile east of' town. He was climbing over a board fence, when one of the boards broke. He fell and ruptured a blood vessel, internally.

He was born August 25, 1831 in Massachusetts and while still a child moved with his parents to Connecticut and lived there eighteen years. From there moved to Peoria County, Illinois and in 1867 Mr. Adkins came to Jasper County, Iowa.

Two years later he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Butters.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Hattie M. and Ella G.
