Wednesday, August 5, 1896E. N. Chapin Dead
The veteran newspaper man of Iowa, and a well-known gentleman of this section, Mr. E. N. Chapin, is dead. A short time ago, we noted the fact that he had been assaulted and badly hurt, by one of his tenants, George H. Henshaw. The assault ended fatally July 29th. Mr. C. was 73 years old. His first newspaper venture was at Albion, in Marshall Cou-_____as in 1856. Later he went to Marshalltown and established the “Times”, which he continued until it was consolidated with the “Times-Republican”, since which time he has looked after his landed interests. He was generally known among the fraternity as “old Grizzily,” on account of his propensity to “speak right out in meetin’.” and his combativeness. In 1886 he married Mrs. Nettie Sanford, a sister of A. J. Logan, of our city. --Thus, one by one, the old-timers in Iowa newspapers are passing away.
