The Newton (IA) Journal, Wednesday, July 11, 1894

DIED - Mr. Levi Mills, for many years a resident of Newton, died at Des Moines, where he had lived for the last three years, last Tuesday, July 3d, 1894.

He has been declining in health for nearly a year and his death was not unexpected. He fell to sleep peaceful, surrounded by those who loved him best. Mr. Mills was born fifty-two years ago, last October, in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. He served for three years in the war of the Rebellion and was wounded in one of the battles. In 1865, he came to Newton, where he lived for twenty-six years. He married in 1870 a Miss Margaret Culbertson, who died three years later, leaving an infant son, who is still living, Mr. Earl Mills. He was known as a quiet, hard-working, honest man, who was true to his friends and affectionate in his family. His body was brought to Newton to be interred in our own beautiful cemetery.

A number of carriages containing friends followed the remains on their last journey.

The G. A. R. and ladies of the W. R. C., assisted by Rev. C. C. Harrah, conducted the services in a fitting and tender manner at the grave. The mourning ones have the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.
