CAPT. STEPHEN A. BISHOP DEAD. – Mr. D. H. Ainsworth received a telegram yesterday from Miss Ella E. Bishop, announcing the fact that her father was dead, and that his body would reach Newton at 11:57 a.m., tomorrow and asking that the G. A. R. would take charge of the funeral. Arrangements have been made by Com. Battles to comply with the request made.

Capt. Bishop came to Newton, as near as we can learn, about 1854 or ’55; bought the farm north of town now owned by Mr. C. Weseman; afterwards was engaged in the drug business with Sol. Gardner in the room now occupied by King as a book store. He came to Newton from California, where he served one or two enlistments in the regular army, part of the time under Gen. Harvey. As a soldier of the regular army he traveled from Kansas to the Pacific Coast. He enlisted in the war of the rebellion and was a captain in the 2d Iowa Cavalry. Along in the latter part f the 70’s he removed to Davenport where he resided at the time of his death. He leaves a wife and one daughter as him immediate family. Many of our citizens will remember the genial Capt. Bishop and extend to the family their sincere sympathies in their hour of affliction. ~ The Newton Journal, Wednesday, Dec. 6, 1893.
