A SAD DEATH. - On last Thursday, at about 12:30, Ona Cook was preparing dinner for her mother and uncle, Mr. John Fawcett, when her little brother came in from the outside and said that the house was a-fire. They live north of the Des Moines road about one and a half miles west of town, and the children were alone there. The two children ran to the school house and Ona got in a cart there and started to town to tell her mother and uncle. She met them after going a short distance and told them of the fire and then followed them back. They were driving quite rapidly when they again came to the school house, and the horse, being used to standing at his place, turned in so suddenly as to throw her out.

She sustained injuries which caused her death. Mrs. Cook, a sister of Mr. Fawcett, with her two children had come from Ohio to live with her brother and had been here about three months. The deceased was a girl of fourteen years of age, of bright and happy disposition, and was a great favorite among all. Her remains were taken to Mitchellville on Friday afternoon and there interred.

The house was entirely destroyed and as there was no insurance the financial loss is a heavy one. Taken together with the loss of a sweet young life, makes a very sad household and they have the deepest sympathy of all who know them. ~ The Newton Journal, October 11, 1893.
