Helen Gladys Teslik, 88, of Grinnell died Friday, Oct. 16, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Smith Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tom Carpe, pastor of Capitol Hill Christian Church in Des Moines, officiating. Organist will be Eleanor Howell-Bates and soloist will be Walter Williams.
Pallbearers will be Kerry Battles, Tim Battles, Darrell Quigley, John Runyan, Doug Swanson and Robert Turecek. Honorary bearers will be members of the Malcom American Legion Color Guard, with burial in McKeever Cemetery, Colfax.
The daughter of Lanar and Lena Henderson Runyan, she was born June 5, 1910, in Jasper County. She attended rural school and later attended school in the Farrar School District.
She was married to Louis Teslik May 2, 1938, in South Carolina, and they lived in various communities while he served in the military. They operated a service station in Clear Lake for several years prior to moving to Grinnell in 1976. While in Grinnell, Mrs. Teslik worked for John’s Hardware. She was active with the Malcom American Legion.
She was a member of the Colfax Christian Church and the American Legion Auxiliary, serving as chaplain.
Surviving are her husband; two children, Royale Battles of Colfax and Ramona Swanson of Newton; one sister, Mabel Pickles of Colfax; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Guy, Arlie, Earl and Carroll Runyan.
A Helen G. Teslik Memorial Fund has been established. ~ Grinnell paper, October 19, 1998
