AT REST. – After many months of pain and bodily anguish, another old and respected citizen of Newton is at rest, Mr. D. Sturdevant having died at his residence on Saturday last.
D. Sturdevant was born April 24th, 1824, in Portage Co., Ohio; March 10, 1840, he came to Union Co., Ohio, then to Delaware Co., Ohio; Nov. 1, 1855, came to Marengo, Iowa; in 1863, removed to Illinois; in 1866, came to Newton and resumed the jewelry business, which he commenced at the age of 23 years, and has followed it ever since. In 1862, he enlisted at Marengo, Iowa, but could not pass inspection on account of ill health. When in Marengo he was twice elected Justice of the Peace, but refused to serve, and was one of the Township Trustees. Married to Martha E. Loveridge, Feb. 7, 1850; she was born in 1830, in Knox Co., Ohio; two children were born to them – Lester and Silas W.
Mr. Sturdevant was one who had the respect and confidence of all who knew him – honest as steel, and true to all his obligations to the state, to the community, and to his family.
He has been a great sufferer during the past year. He leaves an immediate family of a wife and two boys, both grown to manhood, - all of whom were with him in his last hours.
His funeral took place from the Congregational Church, conducted by Rev. Harrah, assisted by Rev. Brooks. After the services at the church his body was taken in charge by the Masonic order, of which he was a worthy member, and by them conveyed to the Newton Cemetery, and deposited in the grave last Monday afternoon.
H. M. Vaughn and wife, Mrs. Ella Eberhart and Fred Meredith, furnished the vocal music at the church, and the K. T. Band the instrumental music to and from the cemetery.
Ther is a calm for those who weep,
A rest for weary pilgrims found,
Who sweetly lie and calmly sleep,
Low in the ground.~ The Newton Journal, Wednesday, April 5, 1893.
