OBITUARY. – “Tired, so tired, and Christ hath given her rest.”
DIED. – At her residence in Newton, on Tuesday, Jan. 17th, 1893, of liver and stomach troubles, Mrs. Elizabeth Mathews, wife of Wm. F. Mathews, aged 57 years, 4 months and 17 days.In 1853 William F. Mathews married Elizabeth Carter, then in the eighteenth year of her age, at Indianapolis, Ind., and soon afterwards they came to Newton to make their home. For nearly forty years they have been identified with Newton and her people and interests. Six children grown to manhood and womanhood have blessed their union. The gentle, loving disposition of Mrs. Mathews had endeared her to every one with whom she associated, while her earnest religious life was a great influence for good in our community. So when it was known that fatal disease had fastened upon her, a deep feeling of regret was felt by every one, which grew into intense sorrow when the word went out that Mrs. Mathews was no more. The assembled united yet broken family, the grief stricken neighbors and friends and the great interest manifested by all our people, from the old pioneers that shared her companionship in early days down to the children in the school room that have shared her smiles of later years, are undoubted manifestations of the strong hold the departed had on the love and respect of our people.
The funeral was held at the M. E. church on Thursday last, Rev. Brooks officiating, and the body laid to rest in the Newton cemetery.
We are requested to return the sincere thanks of he family of the deceased to the many friends who by words and deeds cheered and assisted them in this their hour of bereavement. ~ The Newton Journal, Wednesday, Jan. 25, 1893.
