Eli J. Krajnovich, 87, of Newton died Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.
A funeral service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Newton with the Rev. Stephen Mathison-Bowie officiating. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church where the family will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to First Presbyterian Church or American Heart Association and may be left at the funeral home or at the church the day of the service.
The son of John and Helen (Bogic) Krajnovich, he was born Oct. 30, 1918, in Fulton, Ill. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1937. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Pacific Theater from 1944 to 1946. He served at Iwo Jima and Okinawa prior to the Japanese invasion.
Mr. Krajnovich was a power plant supervisor for Maytag Company for 33 years and retired in 1983. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Maytag Management Club, VFW Post 1655 and American Legion Post 111.
He mainly grew up in Clinton. He moved with his family to Chicago, Ill., for six years before moving back to Clinton, where he graduated from high school. In 1949, he moved to Knoxville and in 1951, to Newton. He was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan and enjoyed collecting coins and stamps. He was an avid outdoorsman and liked to golf and hunt. He also enjoyed listening to big band music.
Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Sandy of Ankeny; a daughter, Carol Lucas of Surprise, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by parents; five brothers, George, Mike, Dan, Nick and Bob; twin sisters, Violet and Viola; and a son-in-law, Jerry Lucas.
