BAXTER — Donald E. "Don" Hewitt, 80, of Baxter died Saturday, June 24, 2006, at his daughter's home in Baxter.

A graveside service was today at Newton Union Cemetery. Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton handled arrangements.

Memorials will be accepted in his name and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Charles Homer and Emma Lou (Davis) Hewitt, he was born July 4, 1925, in Iowa City. He lived most of his life in Jasper County. He grew up in Newton and lived in Baxter since the early 1970s. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He did excavating work on his own.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Shaun Hewitt and Chuck and Ceann Hewitt, all of Baxter; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Pearl "Punk" and Harlen Warner and Toni and Ed Burch, all of Baxter, and Shirley Ross of Newton; 11 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a great-grandson in infancy.
