Prairie City Newspaper, Front Page for accident; death date is 7 Aug 1937; obituary may be on subsequent date. I have only a typed copy containing this information.

JAMES ROSE, 71, HIT BY AUTO AND FATALLY INJURED

James Rose, 71, of Vandalia, was instantly killed last Saturday afternoon when he was hit by a car on No. 163 about five miles west of Prairie City.

Rose had been walking on the pavement, on the left side, when Gysbert Snetselaar stopped to pick him up. As he was attempting to cross the pavement he was hit by a car driven by Mrs. John W. VanderLinden of Pella, suffering a broken neck, crushed chest, fractures of both arms and both legs.

Dr. E. A. McMurray, Jasper County Coroner, said that Mrs. VanderLinden had set her brakes sixty-six feet before striking Rose, but that the car's momentum carried the car and body an additional sixty-three feet before stopping.

James Rose is survived by his wife, four daughters and four sons. An inquest is not expected to be held.

OBITUARY

James Francis Rose, son of William and Lucinda Rose, was born in Des Moines, Iowa on November 26, 1865, and was fatally injured when struck by a car while walking on the highway Saturday afternoon, August 7. At the time of his death he was seventy-one years, eight months and eleven days of age.

When but a boy, he, with his parents and older brother and sister, removed to Vandalia, where he lived until his death.

On August 26, 1898, he was united in marriage to Fanny Hodson, and to this union ten children were born, one son, Frankie, having preceded him in early childhood, and another son, Edgar, passed away in infancy.

Mr. Rose was an energetic hardworking man and in any type of work pursued took great pride in accomplishing a masterpiece. His vocation in early life for several years was serving as a mail carrier on a route from Vandalia to Des Moines. Later he worked as a day laborer, and at the time of his death was sexton of the Vandalia Cemetery.

In the year 1934, he united with the Four-Square Church at Vandalia, of which he was a faithful member until the time of his death.

He was a home loving man, devoting his time to his family, a faithful and true friend, and his death will leave a vacant place in the hearts of his many friends, as well as his loved ones.

Besides his faithful companion, he leaves to mourn his loss four sons and four daughters: Donald of Onawa, Iowa; Dessie, Howard and Mrs. Nellie Anderson, all of Des Moines; and Ada, Vera, William and Clyde, all at home; six grandchildren, one brother, Robert Rose of Knoxville, Iowa; one niece and one nephew, and a number of other relatives.

A precious one from us has gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
God in His wisdom has recalled
The boon his love has given,
And, though his body slumbers here,
The soul is safe in heaven.

Funeral services were held Monday at 2:30 p.m. from the Vandalia Four-Square Church, conducted by Mrs. Harriet McMurray, assisted by Clifford Sumpter from Des Moines. Singing was furnished by Mrs. C. B. Osborne and Mrs. Mitch Brockett, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Carl Weaver. Pallbearers were Russell Hayes, Ed Deakin, Less Gulling, Ford Mott, Pete Gulling and Ollie Trader. Burial was at the Vandalia Cemetery.

CARD OF THANKS

It has been fittingly said that "Every cloud has a silver lining." That silver lining in our recent bereavement, in which we lost our beloved husband and father, was the kindness and loyalty of relatives and friends. To you who have gone through the same experience, nothing needs to be said of our sincere appreciation. And to you who have not, words are inadequate to express the gratitude which we so deeply feel. Mrs. J. F. Rose and Family
