William L. "Bill" DeGreef, 89, of Newton died Wednesday, March 8, 2006, at USA Healthcare in Newton.

A funeral service will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Merle Smith, chaplain of Skiff Medical Center in Newton, officiating. Burial will be at Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made in his name or Hospice of Jasper County and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Jacob and Henderieka Kingma DeGreef, he was born Nov. 8, 1916, in Kellogg. On Oct. 5, 1985, he married Laura Ann Hoadley in Montezuma. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of American Legion Post 111 and VFW Post 1655. He was a farmer and lived in rural Kellogg until he moved into Newton in 1981.

Survivors include a grandson, Brian (Robyn) Hamilton of Knoxville; a granddaughter, Brenda (David) DeHaai of Monroe; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, John (Connie) DeGreef of Newton and Jake (Freda) DeGreef of Kellogg; a sister-in-law, Lucille DeGreef of Newton; a daughter-in-law, Linda Carr of Nashville, Tenn.; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jo Ann Sheeler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, Keith Hamilton; a great-grandson; two sisters, Elizabeth and Bertha DeGreef; and two brothers, Martinis DeGreef and Henry in infancy.
