Clarence Atwell “Trent” Spencer, 90, of 610 S. 3rd Ave. W., a lifelong resident of Newton, died this morning, March 3, at the Skiff Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Reese Chapel.

The Rev. Todd R. Schlitter, assistant pastor of the First United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Sunday. Visitation with the family will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to the Jasper County Historical Society will be accepted.

Survivors are three sons, Paul and James, both of Newton and Herbert of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Barbara, (Mrs. John) Starrett of Newton; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert, of Newton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Florence, in April, 1970, a son, Thomas in 1968, a brother, Myron; and two sisters, Letha and Hazel.

Mr. Spencer, a spray painter for 40 years at the Maytag Co., prior to retiring Dec. 31, 1963, was a member of the First United Methodist Church and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1655 and was a member of the United Auto Workers, Local 997.

Mr. Spencer, an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener, was a Navy veteran of World War I, serving on the USS William O’Brien.

The son of Atwell and Ollie Campbell Spencer, he was born Nov. 19, 1898 in Newton.

He was married to Florence Kaldenberg July 14, 1923 in Newton.
