Lettie M. Smith

Lettie M. Smith, 89, of 905 E. 15th St. S., a resident of Newton for 58 years, died of congestive heart failure Thursday evening, March 9, at the Heritage Manor Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.

The Rev. Timothy Miller, pastor of the Reasnor United Methodist Church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Palo Alto Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 9 a.m. Sunday. Visitation with the family will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to a fund in her name will be accepted.

Survivors are a sister, Violet (Mrs. Lewie) Schultz of Reasnor; and a niece and four nephews, Marilyn (Mrs. Duane) Walker and Kenneth Van Wyngarden, both of Reasnor; Wendell Van Wyngarden of Sioux Falls, S.D., Dwight Van Wyngarden of Waterloo and Duane Van Wyngarden of Knoxville; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, infant twin brothers, two sisters, Iona Smith Jan 17, 1976 and Florence Van Wyngarden April 26, 1987, and a great-niece.

Miss Smith was a member of the Newton First United Methodist Church, 4-O Sunday school class, Newton Woman’s Club, Clio Club and CW Club.

She had taught in rural schools in Jasper County and had been an employee of Denniston and Partridge Co. until her retirement.

The daughter of Arthur J. and Mary A. Marshall Smith, she was born Sept. 11, 1899, in Reasnor, was graduated from Monroe High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa at Cedar Falls.
