Swank, Ella (Niewenhuis) 1898-1989

Ella Niewenhuis Swank, 90, of Nelson Manor Nursing Home, a resident of Newton since 1934 and former resident of the Lynnville community, died of congestive heart failure Thursday afternoon, March, 2, at the Skiff Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Christian Reformed Church in Newton.

The Rev. William Vanden Bos, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in the Newton Memorial Park Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Wallace-Pence Funeral Home after 1 p.m. Saturday. Visitation with the family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to the Martha Circle of the Christian Reformed Church may be left at the funeral home or the church.

Survivors are three sons, Peter, Fred and Carroll Swank, all of Newton; three daughters, Louise (Mrs. Kenneth) Mc Kinney, Anna Mae (Mrs. Willard) Norvell and Barbara (Mrs. Lewis) Hartgers, all of Newton; 26 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Peter Swank, July 31, 1973, a daughter, Margaret Wearmouth, a granddaughter, two great-grandsons, and a brother, James Niewenhuis.

Mrs. Swank, a homemaker, was a member of the Christian Reformed Church and the Mary and Martha Circle.

The daughter of Fred and Martina Klap Niewenhuis, she was born Sept. 4, 1898, at Halfway, The Netherlands. She came with her family to Pella at the age of nine.

She was married to Peter Swank, Sr., Jan 12, 1916, in Sully and the couple lived in the Lynnville community until moving to Newton.
