Walter James Wheatcraft
KNOXVILLE -- Funeral services for Walter James Wheatcraft, 89, of Knoxville, a former resident of Jasper Country, were held Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the First Regular Baptist Church in Knoxville.
The Rev. Damon Reese conducted services. Burial was in the Mount Zion Cemetery in Jasper County.
Memorial contributions to the Knoxville Regular Baptist Church or the American Cancer Society will be accepted.
Williams Funeral Home in Knoxville handled arrangements.
He died Friday.
Survivors are his wife, Illa; three sons, Merle of Chariton, Larry of Des Moines and Dale of Arkansas; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jenny (Mrs. Kenneth) Riley of Versailles, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, four brothers, a daughter, two infant sons, a granddaughter, and a great-granddaughter.
Mr. Wheatcraft farmed near Mount Zion until the spring of 1939 when he moved to a farm near Monroe. He resided there until retiring in November, 1971, when he moved to Knoxville.
Mr. Wheatcraft was a member of the First Regular Baptist Church of Knoxville.
The son of Grand and Blanche Sellman Wheatcraft, he was born Jan. 19, 1903 in the Mount Zion area.
He was married to Illa Ruth Briggs Oct. 5, 1921 in Newton.
