Ralph Van Der Zyl

SULLY -- Ralph Van Der Zyl, 78, of Sully, a lifelong resident of the Sully and Killduff areas, died Sunday, May 28, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sully First Reformed Church.

The Rev. Daniel B. Hakken, pastor of the church, will conduct services. Burial will be in Sully Cemetery.

Family visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home in Pella.

Memorials to the Christian Opportunity Center in Pella or the Sully First Reformed Church will be accepted.

Survivors are his wife, Frances; two sons, Clarence of Sully and Roger of East Dubuque, Ill.; three daughters, Ileen (Mrs. Wayne) Zegers of Sully, Lucile (Mrs. Howard) De Penning of Newton and Mildred (Mrs. Larry) Whetstine of Wellman; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are five brothers, Simon of Pella, Walter of Newton, Floyd of Pella, Cornie, his twin of Pella, and Marion of Bradenton, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Van Der Zyl was a longtime member of the Sully First Reformed Church.

The son of Menze (George) and Jenny Vander Hart Van Der Zyl, he was born Dec. 11, 1910 near Sully and attended Taylor School.

He was married to Frances Harthoorn at her home Feb. 7, 1935.

Mr. Van Der Zyl was employed as a trucker for Sully Creamery until moving to a farm near Killduff in 1945.

In 1960 he returned to Sully and was employed by Ver Ploeg Farm Supply until his retirement.

After his retirement, he refinished furniture and occasionally served as an auctioneer at farm sales.
