1823-1909

Many friends will learn with sorrow of the death of Mrs. Mary Harter, who passed away on Wednesday morning of last week at 6 o’clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H.L. Gearhart. She has been in frail health for the past two years and during that time has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. M. Baldwin of this city, and since last summer with her younger daughter, Mrs. H.L. Gearhart, near Colfax. Last winter she was confined to her bed a great deal of the time but when warm weather came she was very much better. Late in the fall she was taken worse again and her illness finally developed into pneumonia.

Mrs. Harter was born in Jefferson County, Tenn., in 1823, and came to Illinois with her parents when a little girl. In 1841 she was married to Harvey Green who died in 1858. The next year the widow with her six children came to Jasper County, Iowa. In 1861 she was married to Wm. Harter. He died in 1877. Since that time up until about two years ago, Mrs. Harter has lived in Shelby County with her two sons, coming back here for occasional visits. One son died several years ago and the other Levi Green, of Harlan, Iowa, survives the mother and was with her during her last illness.

Besides the son, two daughters survive, Mrs. M. Baldwin, of this city and Mrs. Hurley Gearhart, of Colfax. She also leaves twenty-two grandchildren and thirty one great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, most of whom live in Jasper County. One brother, Mr. C.A. Dotson, of Colfax, now eighty-eight years old, survives.
The funeral was held from the Gearhart home Friday at one o’clock and interment made in the McKeever cemetery. (Jan 6, 1909)
