Beulah F. Gerhart, 89, passed away Friday, March 3, 2006, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Coburn Funeral Home with burial at McKeever Cemetery north of Colfax.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. at Coburn Funeral Home, where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be given to Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

The daughter of Caroline "Carrie" Elizabeth (Emery) and Claud DeReus, she was born May 26, 1916, in Valeria. She attended Valeria Elementary, graduated from Mingo High School in 1934 and later from Drake University in Des Moines. On June 29, 1934, she married Clifford Earl Gerhart in Valeria, where they lived for many years. She served as town clerk. They later resided in Mingo, where she and her husband owned and operated the B & C Café and Lounge.

Mrs. Gerhart was very active in the community and organizations including Jasper County American Legion Auxiliary and the Jasper County Extension Board. She served on the Jasper County American Cancer Board for more than 40 years. She recently resided at Trinity Care Center in Des Moines. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, scrapbooking, genealogy, canning, fishing, camping and playing piano.

Survivors include four children, Charles of New Virginia, Helen Dodd of Lorimor, Ken (Karen) of Tucson, Ariz., and Delores (Ronnie) Robinett of Mitchellville; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Jim Gerhart; her parents; an infant brother, Dwight Emery DeReus; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements are being made by Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax with interment in the McKeever Cemetery north of Colfax.

Beulah Fern DeReus was born to Caroline “Carrie” Elizabeth (Emery) and Claud DeReus on May 26, 1916, in Valeria, Iowa. She attended Valeria Elementary and graduated from Mingo High School in 1934 and later from Drake University in Des Moines. On June 29, 1934, she was united in marriage to Clifford Earl Gerhart at Valeria, Iowa, where they lived for many years, and she served as Town Clerk. Left to mourn her loss are four children: Charles of New Virginia, Helen Dodd of Lorimor, Ken (Karen) of Tucson, AZ, and Delores (Ronnie) Robinett of Mitchellville; 14 grandchildren: Dawn Wilts, Debbie Gerhart, David Gerhart, Darrin Gerhart, Samantha Powell, Dena Gerhart, Tami (David) Jones, Terry (Sheila) Dodd, Shelley (Matt) Arri, DeAnna (Taw) Tamlin, Cassandra (Michael) Linder, Jim Gerhart, Kim Bond, and Dana Robinett; and 13 great grandchildren, and numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 26, 1978, her son Jim Gerhart on Nov. 8, 2000, her parents, an infant brother Dwight Emery DeReus, and three grandchildren, Brian Robinett, Danielle Gerhart, and Denise Gerhart.
