Verne C. Davis, 75, of Newton died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Skiff Medical Center.

A funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Newton with Dr. Roger Russel, retired minister with the United Methodist Church, officiating.

A family visitation is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name.

Burial will be at Russell Cemetery in Russell at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. A lunch and visitation will be held at the church following the funeral service Thursday. Pence-Reese Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The son of Loren Wayne and Bertha May (Wallace) Davis, he was born Aug. 2, 1930, in Marion County. He attended country school and graduated from Attica High School in 1947. He was united in marriage to Evelyn M. Briggs on July 3, 1957, in Ottumwa. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a resident of Newton since 1966.

Mr. Davis worked for more than 38 years at the Maytag Company, retiring in 1993 as senior industrial engineer. He was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and was a life member of the Maytag Management Club. He enjoyed his family, especially his great-grandchildren, and reading, communicating on his computer and socializing over a Diet Coke at the Scoreboard.

He is survived by his wife of Newton; a daughter, Linda (Charles) Walker of Newton; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Loren (Irene) Davis of Hamilton, Boyd Davis and Paul (Connie) Davis, both of Knoxville, and Ronald of Geneva, Ill.; two sisters, Lola Arrendell of Knoxville and Ruth Bish of Woodburn; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lowell, in infancy; and a sister, Leatha Braden.
