Mirror Reflections For the year 1931 (extract of deaths from)
Jan. 1 – O. Butcher, Pleasantville, died from injuries in auto wreck at intersection of 14 and 63 Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Morris and two nephews, formerly of Prairie City, found dead in a Chicago apartment house. Glen Noon puts wallet in shoe and fools bandits near Prairie City.
Jan. 8 – Representatives from several states were in Monroe attending the mid-winter session of the Church of God. Rainfall was less in 1930.
Jan. 15 – L. C. Neff car turns over. Chester Lester, formerly of Monroe, died in Oregon. Admiral Byrd’s lead dog “Unalaska,” reported killed on Monroe streets.
Jan. 22 – Monroe Boy Scouts received charter. Robert Poortinga died Monday at home south of Monroe. E. C. Mahon’s White Wyandottes won at Minnesota State Poultry Show. Coal truck went through Walter Clark residence. Allen Huddleston died Wednesday morning at 2 o’clock at home east of Monroe
Jan. 29 – Prairie City State Bank takes over bank at Percy. Campaign made against glaring headlights. Mrs. Wm. Schorman, Baxter, died.Feb. 5 – A lone aviator flew over Colfax and sounded a fire alarm when a residence was burning. Grasshoppers reported at Otley.
Feb. 12 – Trainload of hogs shipped to Texas from Mingo. Diamond Trail bridge near Reasnor opened. Funeral services held for Mrs. John Tool, of Reasnor.
Feb. 19 – Wm. Porter struck by train in Monroe. Reasnor and Galesburg sent car of foodstuffs to the southern sufferers. Farmers were to meet in Newton to organize hog marketing association. Wolcott market sold to Dick Sjaardema.
Feb. 26 – Warren Grove school district was to vote on road question. State declamatory preliminary contest held at M. E. church.March 5 – Food car arrived safe in Arkansas. Tear gas bomb exploded in Jasper County Savings bank. Reasnor rendering works sold to Des Moines firm. Barber Lumber Co. moved into new yard. Mrs. George Ferguson died. Funeral for Mrs. Delby Trotter held at Hewitt cemetery.
March 12 – A. A. Dillon died Monday. County fair directors named. Fred Wehrman, Baxter, slashes throat with razor. Mrs. M. C. Baird, Prairie City, dead. Fairmount oil station robbed and snow had halted traffic.
March 19 – Frank Chipps family injured in auto wreck. Howard McDaniel turned pheasants loose. Prof. M. A. Love re-elected superintendent of Monroe schools. Dr. E. E. Mossman locates in Monroe. Funeral services held for Garrett Kruzeman, of Sully.
March 26 – Two large barns burn near Laurel; livestock die. Funeral services held Wednesday for Mrs. Aaron Wood, of near Tool’s Chapel. Funeral services held for Chas. Shelly. K of P officers visit Monroe lodge. Van Vilet general store and drug store building at Otley destroyed by fire. Chas. Wilson, Prairie City, died Sunday.April 2 – Zondervan family in auto accident. B. W. Charles died at home in Perry. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Long return from Florida. Robert Cross, Colfax boy, killed in motorcycle accident.
April 9 – Ruth Oldham was second at Chariton in declamatory contest. Swift cream station moved from Monroe.
April 16 – Funeral of R. P. Tool held today, was grandson of founder of Monroe. Funeral held Tuesday for W. O. Tice. Funeral of John W. Booth held at Prairie City. Johnson barn near Prairie City, destroyed by fire. Funeral services held for Herman Bauman at Pella.
April 23 – Funeral of A. M. Hough held at Newton Sunday. A. T. Van Roekel killed by dynamite blast south of Monroe. Art T. Wright dropped dead last evening.
April 30 – Monroe State Savings and Monroe National banks consolidate. Chas. Conway, Colfax farmer, found dead. Mrs. Marie Tappan, aged Laurel woman, found bound and gagged.May 7 – Monroe firemen go to school at Ames. Senior class play next week. State Savings bank remodeling interior. Jarnagin well oil station to H. Beatty.
May 14 – Mrs. Marguerite McDaniel, Newton waitress, chocked by bandits. Mrs. Samuel W. Shaw died Thursday. Prof. A. Van Haveskerke, Newton musician, dead. O. E. Smith, former Monroe school head, was dead in Indianola.
May 21 – Dr. Chas. Medbury, Des Moines, spoke at high school commencement. Funeral for J. W. LeGrand to be held Friday. Four high school girls injured in auto accident.
May 28 – Funeral for George K. Valentine was held Tuesday afternoon. Mercury near 100 today. Memorial address given by Rev. Grooters. Funeral services for Virgil Shrader held in East Moline, Ill.June 4 – Albert L. Meredith, Lynnville postmaster, committed suicide by drinking lye water. Mrs. Henry Steenhoek was bitten on ankle by a snake. Mrs. Gerrit Van Wyk, near Fairmount, badly burned when gasoline stove exploded.
June 11 – Mirror cooking school was to start. Five hundred people expected to attend the State Guernsey meeting, June 17, at the Munson Livingston farm. John Van Waardhuizen, Otley, died at Mahaska County hospital. Mrs. James S. Buckley was taken ill on Monday afternoon and died Tuesday evening at ten minutes to seven. Funeral held Thursday. J. C. Cooper, Runnells, taken to jail, charged with attempt to do great bodily injury to Harold Rojohn, of Vandalia. Munson Livingston badly injured in fall from scaffold in barn.
June 25 – Mrs. W. J. Telfer and three children, of near Prairie City, killed by a car driven by L. F. Wheelock, of Des Moines, near Four-Mile Creek, on No. 63, near Des Moines. Elzie Clement killed himself near Mingo. John W. Deal, Newton, killed by a car north of Newton on Highway No. 14, Friday morning, Rayburn Russell injured. Rum car ditched near Newton airport; Bertha Westercamp in hospital and husband in jail. Lone bandit robbed Prairie City bank of $824, and escaped, June 11. J. A. Dibel reported a shortage of rainfall.July 2 – Monroe was to celebrate Saturday. Clarence De Penning dies from heat while working on Comer farm, near Galesburg. John Kaldenberg died at Pella. June closed with the hottest record in fifty years.
July 9 – Pella had a $35,000 fire. A missing Monroe girl found in Des Moines.
July16 – Sipe furniture store sold. Mrs. H. M. Tharp seriously burned. Woods clan hold picnic. Fred Kaiser, Baxter, killed self. Mrs. J. E. Cornelius, Pella, killed self.
July 23 – Golf tournament here next Sunday. George Bierma found dead at Churchill farm west of Monroe. Funeral services held Tuesday for Mrs. Wm. Estle. Taxes cut in Jasper county by board of supervisors.
July 30 – Old Settlers’ picnic August 30. Dr. H. M. Tharp injured in auto crash in Des Moines. Clark Sipe sells furniture business in Monroe. Monroe golf club hold tournament.August 6 – Lauerman’s store in Newton destroyed by fire. Tent meetings were being held at Red Rock. Plans were made to drill for oil north of Monroe. Charles Gibford, Newton, killed self by turning on gas. Bobby McComas, rescues Newton girl from drowning. Dale Beals, 17, found near Mingo with bullet through head.
August 13 – Light company makes another cut in rates. Maytag barn north of Monroe destroyed by fire.
August 20 – Funeral services for Mrs. James Edwin Corr were held Sunday. Bad check artists visit Monroe merchants. C. R. Moberley, Kellogg merchant, died from stroke Sunday.
August 27 – Ernest Beyer, Pella, took his life. Covered wagon from Keokuk was in town.Sept. 3 – Beryl Braley, Kellogg, killed in air crash. T. J. Newell, Mt. Prairie farmer, killed self with rifle Monday. Donald Livingston won first and second places in dairy calf class at state fair.
Sept. 10 – Cars crash at corner of 14 and 63, nine injured. Monroe schools were to open Monday. Move made for 60-cent corn.
Sept. 17 – Jasper county fair opens Monday. Rev. E. E. Barber died last Thursday. Corn meeting held in city park. State highway engineers promise protection at intersection of 14 and 63.
Sept. 24 – Rev. O. S. Hesseltine, new M. E. pastor. “Alfalfa Bill” Murray spoke at county fair. Economy day in Monroe Sept. 26. Monroe golfers bring home the bacon from Indianola.Oct. 1 – E. A. McBride funeral held today. Senator O. P. Myers spoke to Farmers’ Institute in Monroe, Friday.
Oct. 8 – Raymond Hoagland killed in auto accident. Ben Gould dies from operation. First National Bank of Newton closes. T. H. Maytag, Newton, died Tuesday morning. Garry Furgison, Marion county, confesses to murder of Mary Volkers.
Oct. 15 – Garry Furgison pleads not guilty to murder of Mary Volkers. County husking bee to be held near Colfax. Mirror Publishing Co. installing Goss printing press.
Oct. 22 – Killduff and Kellogg banks merged. Strater Bros. robbed by bandits. Rock Island train grinds man to pieces near Prairie City. R. C. Shultz, of Auburn, buys Valentine hardware store.
Oct. 29 – 4-H clubs met at Prairie City. Legion to sell Christmas trees. Dr. H. M. Tharp breaks leg playing ball.Nov. 5 – Clifford Waddell killed in auto accident west of Monroe, J. A. Winber, Newton, died Tuesday morning. Jas. Hertzog died Tuesday.
Nov. 12 – Husking bee held at S. A. Johnson farm. Boy Scouts hold memorial for Clifford Waddell.
Nov. 19 – Funeral services held for Mrs. Flora Shaw Tuesday. Herman C. Strater killed by fall. Henry De Leeuw died Wednesday. Community Chest drive to start.
Nov. 26 – Reasnor threatened by flood. Lone bandit sticks up Knoxville hotel.Dec. 3 – Community Chest successful. Ammer Bros. holding big sale. Mahon chickens won at Chicago poultry show.
Dec. 10 – J. M. Reid, Otley coal miner, killed in auto accident near Des Moines. Neighbors gathered corn for Keith Nearmyer.
Dec. 17 – Commercial club to put on free movies for holidays. Mrs. Arthur Avery, Knoxville, killed by automobile. Many aspirants for post office.
Dec. 24 – Monroe to have talking pictures. Mrs. Wm. Marshall died Tuesday evening. Kellogg café gutted by fire.
Dec. 31 – Post office entries closed Tuesday. Funeral services held Saturday for Harry Porter. Mrs. Ella Lee, Prairie City, died Tuesday.
