Golden Wedding – On the 18th inst. occurred the 50th anniversary of the marriage of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Phelps. Mr. Phelps is an old and valued citizen of our county, coming here 18 years ago from Ohio. The relatives and friends to the number of 75 gathered at their home four miles west of this city to celebrate the rare event, viz: a Golden Wedding. It was a complete surprise to the old lady and gentleman, but they entered into the festivities of the occasion with a zest which was surprising considering their ages. Mr. F. E. Phelps and Miss Hylay L. Adams were married July 18th, 1833, in Stockhome, N.Y.
Mrs. Phelps was made the recipient of an elegant pair of gold spectacles and Mr. Phelps a gold headed cane by their children of whom were present their sons Frank R. and Alfred M. Phelps, their daughters, Mrs. M. Vincent, of Des Moines, and Mrs. W. F. Bodley, of Chicago; Mrs. H. Brockway, a sister of Mrs. Phelps, was also present from Cleveland, Ohio.
The young people tripped the light fantastic to until the wee small hours, when all quietly dispersed to their homes wishing that Mr. and Mrs. Phelps might live to celebrate many more anniversaries.
