By Helen Hausersperger
NEWBURG – The Green Grove Club celebrated its 30th anniversary with a tea held at the Town Hall in Gilman. There were 33 persons in attendance and nine were charter members. Three charter members are still active in the club. They are Francis Paul, Arlene McGrew and Dorothy McGrew.
Club President Doris Paul have the welcome and each guest introduced herself. Program chairman Ruth Ann Anderson presented Randy Rutherford, performing in mime, “Off to a Bad Start.” Francis Paul read the club’s history. Since the secretary’s records were destroyed in a fire 5 years ago, it had to be done from memory. She reported the first meeting Mar. 27, 1947 was held with Mary VandeKamp as hostess. Agnes Vieth was elected President, Viola Goebel, vice president; Winifred Willard, secretary and treasurer and Ethel Cockrane as reporter. Judith Hulin suggested the name for the club, Green from Green Castle Township and Grove from Hickory Grove, resulting in Green Grove.
There was a 20th year celebration held in 1967. Jan Paul then presented a reading, “The First Kiss.: The guests were served from the tea table which was covered with a green and white checked cloth, with white milk glass and silver accessories, green and white napkins and mints, and mum plants. Pouring coffee was Agnes Vieth, and the green punch was served by Doris Paul. Cookies and nuts also were served.
On display were several pictures and yearbooks for most of the 30 years. That table, as well as the walls, were decorated in green and white. The committee for the table and decorations was Betty Rosedale and Doris Rutherford; for program, Ruth Ann Anderson and Janice Everts; flowers, Jane Runner; invitations, Pat Cook, Bea Runner and Marilee Weir, with all members assisting.
In charge of the guest book was Arlene McGrew, who pinned corsages on all charter members and Blanche Parmenter. All charter members were also presented with a mum plant.
