Irwin Luckily Escapes Death

Wednesday afternoon as Hull Irwin - rural route carrier number two-was returning to the city he met with misfortune which might have been proven more serious had he been a minute sooner.

He was near the Nelis Dullard farm when a telephone pole snapped under pressure of the wind and fell just after the buggy passed. The guy wire fell in such manner as to entangle the horses which became frightened and broke loose from the buggy, throwing Mr. Irwin over the dashboard on his head. He luckily escaped injury.

The horses were caught about a quarter of a mile this side of Valeria. Mr. Irwin succeeded in fixing up the broken vehicle and reaching home. He reported his trouble to the Manager Ward of the telephone company, who immediately told him the company would bear his expense. A strong wind was blowing, which is believed responsible for the pole falling. Had he been hit by the pole the story of the occurrence would of been vastly different, no doubt. Newspaper unknown, but probably the Colfax Clipper, Colfax, Iowa.
